For your consideration

HOPE IS THE FIRE THEY CAN'T PUT OUT

“The Match” was one of the first songs we wrote for the show, inspired by Rutka’s extraordinary story. When we’re young, hope comes naturally, a childlike faith in what’s possible. But as we follow Rutka through the collapse of her world, hope shifts from instinct to a deliberate, defiant choice.

The song explores that tension: hope against overwhelming odds, when holding on can feel as futile as trying to spark a fire in the middle of the ocean. That is what oppression wants us to believe, that change is impossible. But it isn’t.

True change is born from those who refuse to give in, who choose hope even when no path forward is visible. This song honors that choice, and the small but vital acts of courage that keep humanity alive.

Jocelyn Mackenzie is a Brooklyn-based musician, maker, and medium who creates intimate pop songs for a generation of seekers. A "hyper-creative" according to Broadway World, her diverse yet integrated skills inherently inform one another and are inextricably intermingled in her creative process. Best known as the singing drummer from indie-pop band Pearl and the Beard along with bandmates Jeremy Lloyd-Styles and Emily Hope Price, Mackenzie released her debut full length solo album PUSH on Ani DiFranco's label Righteous Babe Records in 2021, which Under the Radar described as "triumphant, spirited, powerful, and jubilant." She now has several releases on Righteous Babe, including latest live record “COME ON” released in 2024. Joined on stage by her husband, bandmate, and collaborator Harry Bolles, their shape-shifting sound is at once personal and universal. A diverse multidimensional artist, Mackenzie also creates wearable art, costumes, and video. At her core, Mackenzie's extra-sensory skills inform her songwriting and visual art, integrating media and meaning to create work that is both sensual and personal. (photo cred: Liz Jang)
